Sligo has been designated as European Volunteering Capital for 2017. It is an enormous achievement for Sligo to be selected to host a European Capital event which has National and International Significance.  Previous winners are Barcelona (2014); Lisbon (2015); London (2016).

To mark the historic occasion of the designation of Sligo as European Volunteering Capital 2017, Sligo County Council is hosting a very special evening of music, song, dance, and spoken word is to take place in the Knocknarea area on Friday 27th January 2017 to launch the years activities. Some of Sligo’s finest performers will feature in this unique evening, sharing and celebrating the strength and range of creative collaboration in Sligo.

Artists appearing include: Michael Rooney, Niamh Crowley, Kieran Quinn, Tommie Gorman, Sligo Academy of Music Sinfonietta Orchestra, Sligo Gospel Choir and our finest traditional and classical musicians. Highlights from Michael Rooney’s wonderful and inspiring compositions Battle of the Books, Famine,  De Cuellar and Macalla suites will be performed alongside a new arrangement of his seminal Prince Charles Suite by a top quality ensemble of traditional and classical musicians, tracing historical and cultural influences on Sligo, and Ireland.

This is a not to be missed event to mark and celebrate Sligo and its people. We look forward to seeing you there
